im looking at a 91 twin turbo 300zx for $9500 with 50miles on it, its got all stillen upgrades...body kit, intake, 18 inch wheels, greddy catback stainless steel exhaust upgrade and nice stereo system, plus its what i need 5 speed!!! i asked the guy whats wrong with it and he said whenever the car gets hot, he says the catalytic converters or turbos hes not sure starts to smell like rotten eggs, is this a problem with a broken seal on a turbo or the one of the turbos is shot? or you guys think its sulfur in the exhaust, too much water in the exhaust system, oil too thin? i would really appreciate any suggestions if i should worry about this or not, thanks guy!!!

Re: 91 300zx TT problem, unsolvable or no?
Egg smell in the exhaust == the cats.
Egg smell in the engine bay == the battery. The gas is hydrogen sulfide, and the cats and battery are the only two places that have sulfur. Either way, both cheap to fix. You could even get some hi-flow cats in there to replace your existing cats to get a few extra ponies. Just make sure that you don't get any kind of smoke out the exhaust when you rev it. Blue smoke is oil, which probably means a bad oil seal in the turbo or the piston rings. White smoke is usually water vapour and this is normal when you first start the engine. If it does it when hot though, look out; Probably a leaky head gasket. Black smoke means its running rich, which usually is quite cheap to fix. Also, check to make sure that you cant feel or see any small bits of metal in the oil filler hole. Run your finger around (when the engines off of course) and if it feels scratchy, dont buy it. This I forgot when buying my z31, and it ended up costing me thousands to fix. -Mike |

Re: 91 300zx TT problem, unsolvable or no?
thats pretty funny that you mentioned that, cause the guy told me when the car gets hot is when you get that smell and also he said theres a bit of leak on the front end that he asked his mechanic and he said its something not to worry about, minor problem, im going to look at the car wed. and what should i look for? check out the leak on the front and how much if it was the head gasket would it cost to fix say at a nissan dealship...maybe ill subtract that from the price or something, let me know cause i think the guy is pulling a fast one on me for me not to notice!

But a ZedX isnt for you then. It IS if you are financially inclined. But if you have neither mechanical, or finantial inclination... Dont get a Zed. Or one with throuble none-the-less. Other than that, the car looks great. It's RIGHT near me too. If I had the money, I would hit it. Haha -Wes

Re: 91 300zx TT problem, unsolvable or no?
Ok, heres a list of things I perform when looking at a car:
1) Check for smoke out the exhaust, especially when under heavy acceleration. This is number one indication if there is something wrong internally. 2) Check the fluid levels. This is real easy but it shows you if he's cared for the car or not. Check the oil dipstick level, brake level, coolant etc. 3) Check around the rim of the oil filler cap for scratchy debris. This could indicate major problems. 4) With the engine running, check for ticking sounds in the engine bay. Ticking usually means valvetrain problems. If its really soft, it could just be the injectors, but if its loud enough to be noticible over the hum of the engine, this means problems. 5) Make sure it idles smooth. A lumpy idle could just be a result of an AAC valve problem or something, but it could be something far worse. 6) Check the shocks by pushing down on the rear and front of the car and see if it keeps bouncing. If it continues to bounce after you've pushed down on it, you'll probably need the shocks replaced. 7) Check the body for rust etc. Probably wont find much if any on a z32 yet, but best to check anyway. Also check to see if he's had any dings. A big ding thats been repaired could mean that the frame might be bent. Ask him if he's ever crashed it and if so, how bad. 8) Take it for a spin, if its passed all 7 previous tests, and its a pleasure to drive, then go for it! -Mike |
