*E32 Warning*

Transmission blew

Stupid thing has been teasing me by shifting smoothly appearing to get better only to totally die on me. Anyone out there know what a rebuild should cost?

Warning to anyone buying an E32--find a manual transmission. I know they're rare but unless you find one with a service record on the trans it will bite you later. Since I've bought mine I've learned that the average life span on the zf 4 22 hp is around 150k. Mine died at 157k. If it shifts hard at all don't get it, don't listen to anyone who makes excuses as to why it does it or trys to justify the reason. I had a powertrain warantee that expired at 156k, irony huh? Now I'm stuck with a rather large paper weight that still requires payments and insurance.

I would expect around 2K$. I might be wrong but I havent seen a price for one in a while. I know that the diff. costs about 1700$ so it might be around 3k.

Re: *E32 Warning*

No one around here will touch it. All a bunch of rednecks that are scared of imports. I called BMW and got a quote of $3,500 for a rebuilt. If I supply my own, labor should not excede $900.

BMW dealers dont rebuild anything. Everything is replaced with new. They dont enve cut rotots, they just replace them. SO if youg et it done at a dealer you know the entire tranny will be brand new and will work as long as your 1st one. But if you think you have the time, paitance and skill to rebuild the thing then go ahead.

no, it's a rebuilt. I talked with the service dept. A new ZF transmission cost more than $3,500. That quote was for for the rebuilt and labor.

I found a place that would rebuild a 4hp22 tranny for $995.00 plus shipping. I just bought a 735i and the tranny is locked in Limp Home Mode. Needs to be replaced so I know the feeling. The company is located in Phoenix, AZ and the name is Phoenix Remanufactured Transmissions. Here is the Website

www.phoenixhardparts.com

Hope this helps.

yea. already found out about them. But fortunately I don't need them just yet. I decided to fix it myself. The cars runs, but now I have hard shifts again. Before the incident there were two fluid changes. The second smoothed everything out nicely. It also clogged up the filter so bad that the car wouldn't move. I don't understand why it would start shifting hard again. Any thoughts?

You might want to take it to an authorized mechanic and let them diagnose it. I found out that they have regulated pressure problems with the switch. It may be applying too much pressure to the clutches at certain times, and then not enough at others. Also, you may be having issues with the Pressure Valves inside the tranny. You might want to do a search on the problem and read through some common issues with that particular tranny. I have been on the internet trying to find information about the electrical system on my '88 735i. I have narrowed down my issue to an electrical short. The tranny is not getting any voltage to the switch. Hopefully easy fix. Sorry I don't have more possibilities to suggest. If I think of anything else, I will post.
