93 Camry XLE stalls with jerks when pushing the accelarating pedal down.

My 93 camry xle was running fine till Friday when I suddenly felt the pedal is not working when pushed down. I was at 45mph and drove about 3 miles when that happened. The car stalled. After 20 minutes it started to work again, but this time if the pedal is pushed a little faster it will jerk and then will not work, even pushed to the floor.

The next day I checked the engine collant was empty, both in the resorvoir and the radiator, so I added coolant, and it is keeping at the full level also the engine temperature remains near C. Therefore I do not think now it is the coolant problem.

Now when I push the pedal very slowly, it seems to go upto 35-40 mph, but when it a little more fast, it does not work. the engine speed remains below 1000 rpm. again ease the pedal and push very slowly, it works.

What could have gone wrong ? FYI, the engine sign is on for about month now.

I am a relatively new driver and totally ignorant anout the mechanics. till now the owners manual source for me. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Bring it to a mechanic who has been recommended to you by a friend. Alternatively, bring it to a Toyota dealer, but bring your wallet.

If you need a new distributor plus the cost of installation, better bring two wallets.

The mechanic says the Ignition Coil is bad and the fuel pressure is tremendus. Once he replaces these two parts with new ones, it will run better. Initially it will be 500/- followed by a Tune up that will another 500/-

The next thing he will check is the engine service sign...

Does that sound ok to you? I am afraid I might end up spending more money then the actual cost of the car. it is a 93 camry with 123K mileage.

have him do a diagnostic first on the whole car. That's dumb reasoning to do repair work first then check the codes for check engine light.

In all honesty, you're better off going to a Toyota dealer for this kind of thing than some indie shop, simply because indie shops tend to order the wrong parts and make you take longer.

Yes, check the ECM codes before you spend anything. It may tell you exactly what's wrong. Don't waste money guessing.
