88 Camry Idle Up

Hi,
when I turn on the AC, the engine RPM drops and the AC clutch releases after couple seconds due to low RPM. So basically the AC does not function in local. But it's great on highways. Apparently the Idle Up does not work. Anyone knows how to check it and fix it? Thanks.

Re: 88 Camry Idle Up

Get the Haynes repair manual for your car and check out how to test the Idle Speed Control Valve on pages 4-14 and 4-15.

There is a separate idle speed valve on the passenger side near the throttle tube and is attached to the firewall. When you push the AC button, an electrical signal is sent to this valve and it causes a small vacuum leak, making the idle rev up and allows the AC compressor to come on when proper rpms are sensed. I replaced it on my 89 Camry when it had similar condition.
