Racing an automatic
Is it possible, at all, to race an automatic? Right now, my 2000 Neon is bone stock with an automatic transmission but once I put on some minor mods (i.e.: cat-back exhaust system, cold air intake) I want to start racing. Any advice or tips or discouragement?

Also, I'm in the market for a turbo kit for this car. Any suggestions?

Re: Racing an automatic
I've also got a 2000 Neon with an ATX, and the real problem with it that I've experienced is that it's really hard to keep the rpm's up. You're always either too low in gear or you downshift, so basically driving with it floored gets the most power out of it HEHE. And I guess that's not bad if you're racing! Anyhoo...If you want to keep the ATX, get a performance valve body (howell automotive has em). It'll really tighten up your shifts, chirpin your tires 1-2 at 50mph ain't bad! If your car is gonna be solely an autocrosser, there are some conversions that make the 3-speed auto into a 3-speed clutchless manual as well, but I don't know all that much about those. I tell ya what tho, those nice tall gears would be great with a turbo on it! =)

Howell Automotive is testing a new set of transfer gears for the 3-speed auto. It changes the final drive ratio from 2.86 : 1 to 3.55 : 1. What that means is faster acceleration! and higher rpms at cruising speed, so you'd lose some fuel economy on the freeway. All I can say is *drool*!

Re: Racing an automatic
An atx is hard to race. You can't control the power or rpms at all. If you put an atx with mods against an mtx with the same mods, the mtx will win.
