hey help a newb out!

hey sup all, im new to this forum so take it easy on the ripping. Well here's my question. I own a 93 firebird formula 350lt1 6spd just put a new engine, tranny, and clutch in it (to much cash) but now i need help with the mufflers. At this point i have stock pipeing into a magnaflow muffler (not my chose). I have been talking to some of the exuahst pros around here and they say it is almost imposiable to put perfect straight pipes on that kind of firebird. is this true. 2 question. my cat has a ugly clanking noise and i want to get ride of it (cat) wat is the best hallow it out or get ride of it altogether? 3 question ive been looking into headers for it and wow wat a buch of bull shit smog crap. i was wondering ,,,,do i have to rip out all my smog crap just to put headers on it? or can i custome tap the headers to refit the smog inserts??? just a thought plzz i need all the feedback i can get! thxs

Re: hey help a newb out!

why did you put in a new engine?
straight pipes ? physically straight or no cat no muffler straight?
take the cat out and put in a high flow cat if you need emissions, if not put in an off road pipe.
what companies have you been looking for headers from? hooker makes the best long tubes without emissions, make sure you get the jet hot coated.

personally if i was you and i was doing the whole exhaust at the same time i would put in true duals. that would mean that you need to buy a different panhard bar (bmr makes them) so you can run the exhaust correctly

if you have any more questions let us know

hey thxs for the reply. Hmmm ok say i get the hooker headers so wat do i do with the imessions that go into the exhaust manifold? my freind said it won't run unless it is pluged in or all of it totaly riped out. And about the straight pipes i was told that u can't run true straight (as in one tube of each header) becuse of the way the car is set up (don't ask ...thats just wat he said and hes the exhaust pro around here). Well in northdakota it is not eligal to run a car without a cat so i think i mite just take it out is this wise? cus my exhaust sounds like SHIT!

I have a nother question for u.... do i have to pull this motor to drop in a new cam?? or is it posible to get it in there???? thxs alot like i said im a newb and would like to learn all i can. thxs

Re: hey help a newb out!

whe you put in the long tubes you need to get rid of all the emissions things and plug the holes. straight pipes aree done with a little bit of imagination and a good pipe bender but yes you can have 3in pipes gfoing all the way back with the panhard bar from bmr.
i have heard of people doing cams wihtout engine removal but it is always easier to do it when the motor is out

Well. there are a lot of things to take into consideration if you are planning on running the huge 3 inch pipe all the way back. Clearance, heat shields, suspension travel. If all of that clears and you are willing to have that much pipe exposed under your car then i'm sure you can do it. The panhard bar is a good point and i'm sure that a true dual exhaust will be very beneficial to your power and your sound.

If you decide to change the cam in car (yes its possible, but the radiator needs to be removed, and other things too) then don't watch those mini car shows like 2 Guys Garage (which has 3 guys, get that!) and horsepower TV, because those guys will do it in their half hour time-slot. This is impossible, and I hate how they lead guys on with this. People new to cars tear into something to find that they won't get it back together for another few days, and they need something to drive to work. So be expecting some time if you decide to change the cam in-car, or at all for that matter. Also, when swapping cams, ALWAYS change the lifters or that new cam will quickly eat a nice hole in your old lifters. Yes I know you said that it was just rebuilt, but still change them because the need the same amount of wear (cam + lifters). It would be very frustrating if you had to rip it all open again for new lifters later on. Hope this helps.
