what is the clutch release bearing, if it is making noise will it do permanent damage? a mechanic said sometimes it can work itself out, are there ways i can help it go away?

My clutch release bearing has been noisy for over a year. At some point it will crater and I will be clutchless. Usually, they fall apart and don't work, without damage to other parts. I have had one lock up and ruin the pressure plate assembly, which can get expensive.
