rough dnshift, or no dnshift then neutral and bangs in late.
1998 rough dwnshift,at times. Goes to neutral at some stops, it will go back in drive if the throttle is feathered. but not without a hard hit into gear. this seems to occur the more agressively I need to stop. I do not drive agressively. The trans is less likely to act up if I make very passive long stops, how ever this is allowing a long slowdown down (very light braking)to a gradual stop. This is unreasonable for other traffic behind me. At times the trans works well coming to a stop. Other times I feel a hard downsift to 1st. Then sometimes I come to a stop and feel nothing and the its like in neutral, like it did't find first gear. I need to be careful starting when this occurs be cause it will bang in gear if too many RPMs are applied. This seems more likly to happen on a down grade stop. This occurs warm or cold. It always go back into 1st if ''N''is selected then back to "DRIVE''. Please help me-I am becoming very skeptical as I search Winstar transmission woe's.

I will add-this is a 1998 w/90,000, bought new, well maintained, that has been a good machine for us and still cruises great! I changed the fluid&filter and downshift condition is unchanged. The fluid was changed at 50,000 previously. At both fluid changes the oil had good coloration & smelled normal. This transmissioin shifts up through the ranges seemingly fine, and downshifts to pass well. The engine is in good running order. I here a light knock on the 1st to 2nd shift.
