Speed Limit Problem

My friend owns a 2002 Neon and has a slight problem with her car. When ever her car reaches about 70 MPH, it stops accelerating. The only thing I can think of is some sort of governor that kicks in at 70 mph, but that sounded a little rediculous to me. If it is a governor, could someone please tell me how to deactivate it, if it's not, any help you could offer would be great.

Hi, the governor on her Neon is 118 MPH. Sounds like something with the fuel system/ emissions has went haywire.

WORD! no car has a govenor that shuts off at 70Mph... really need to check the fuel system or get that checked out fast.

I also thought that neons only read 120 on the guage? I thought there govenor shut off at 108Mph?

there can't be a governor at 70 MPH because I've been able to get to 80 or 90 MPH on my 2000


Here in Canada, we measure speeds in kilometers, so that's between 140 and 150 Km/h

Well, a couple of things come to mind. Maybe the governor is kicking in... If she is not putting the car in D (Drive - for automatic)... If shes driving a a manual transmission, then you might have fuel problems or something else cause. You know if the governor is kicking in if you you feel the vibration in the engine and your RPM guage (if applicable) is reaching redline and starts to move back and forth...
I have a 2000 Dodge Neon and I have had the governor kick in on 2nd gear at around 55MPH and ive maxed out at 120MPH without the governonr kicking in.
