Where is the Idle Screw to SPEED it up..

Please answer this instead of just reading it if you know, i have a 1990 3.1 euro, and it HAS to be set at a higher idle. Tried that idle relearn crap, and it didnt do anything. I know there is a way to either turn a screw(says in hood factory set screw for idle)-WHERE IS IT..

I had this car for 2 weeks, and i swear it i'm gonna ride it to the ground now, cause it makes me pissed. Today while doing around 50mph, the car just dies, and the steering wheel LOCKS UP. Everyone says its this, that, fuel pump, filter, aic, etc etc etc... Its the damn idle.

Re: Where is the Idle Screw to SPEED it up..

Attitude aside, the screw you're looking for is indeed on the throttle body. Look, I even lifted a picture off ebay and drew on it for you. The circle is the screw that sticks out from the body to control how much air enters at idle (your foot ain't on the pedal). The arrow indicates where the screw is. Its a torx T10 or 15, I don't remember. Hope that helped you out.

Thanks a million guys, like 2 seconds after i entered my thread i figured to look really good for it. I found it, adjusted if about a 1/2 turn, then another 1/2. Now, the car idles at 1000rpm's instead of the SLUGGISH 400-500 it was at. Helped alot, now only time will tell if it will stall out again.

BTW.. Sorry if seemed pissed off, it's just that i could have gotten in a good accident when this baby stalled out. I still love this car, it's a baby with only 46,330 miles on it. Thanks for the replies.

the t code MFI 3.1 which is what you have has its idle controlled by an idle air motor mounted on the throttle body. if it is hunting, then this is bad.

Maybe you should see if your vaccuum lines are all in good condition, as they can get very brittle with age and break and crumble. Good luck.

Re: Where is the Idle Screw to SPEED it up..

that idle screw isn't like the idle screw on a carburator... i think that screw is more to provide the exact stop where the butterfly comes to a complete close. turn that screw too much and what you are doing is partially opening that butterfly - to do the job that the IAC is supposed to be doing. I say you are adjusting one part to compensate for another part that is misadjusted/bad

when that throttle plate hits the tip of that screw, the butterfly should be *completely* closed - I don't even think that screw would be classified as an 'idle screw'

Re: Where is the Idle Screw to SPEED it up..

idk, but my idle is pretty good now, hasnt changed yet, still idles at 800 which is good, i could hear the diffrence as to when it was open to much, where it is now is good. Dad Checked it Said it Was Good, the IAC has yet to be replaced but i will do so just to be on the safe side.

Re: Where is the Idle Screw to SPEED it up..

to avoid replacing it if it's not faulty, i'd think you could test it by applying voltage to the motor leads and seeing if the valve opens or closes, also see if it's just obstructed at the valve. need to know if it's 12v or 5v and the correct polarity, there should be a 3rd wire that is the position sensor, right? something to investigate...

Re: Where is the Idle Screw to SPEED it up..

Hey, i Replaced My IAC Motor and at First The Car Was Running So Rough, As i Soon Figured Out I Turned the Idle Screw too Much, i Turned it Back to where the butterfly plate is closed, But now My Car Idles at 500, Which Is Very Low to me, I have Reset the Car Numerous Times and the Idle always comes back to 500. Is there anyway to Speed it up Or Am i doing somthing Wrong.
