2004 Camry mileage

I was just wondering, I have a new 2004 Camry SE with only a 4 cylinder engine and I'm getting 22.5 miles per gallon.

I'd say that I drive roughly half the time in stop and go heavy congestion situations, and the other half nice 70-80 mph highway miles. 22.5 seems a little low, do you think this sounds right?

What are some things that could be causing lower mileage?

It sounds about right to me. You will get your best mileage around 50-55 mph. Faster than that your mileage will go down. Also will go down in city driving.

Never had a brand new car, but have heard you won't get the best mileage until after 8-10,000 miles, when the rings are fully seated.

I recently purchased a 2004 Camry LE with a 4 cylinder automatic. I just ran the first tank of gas in it and got about 27.8 miles per gallon. This was mixed driving, about 50% highway and 50% town. 22.5 does sound a little low. The highway driving was between 70 and 80 mph, I really don't think 70 mph is going to make a huge difference in gas mileage. An old Camry I had would get 35 mpg on the highway at 70. I would continue to check the gas mileage and see if it improves. If the car has over 10,000 miles on it, check the air filter, even if it doesn't I would check it, that could cause the fuel mileage to go down. If you are planning to take a trip, check the mileage then and see what the highway mileage is. Most people I've known get better than the estimated 32 mpg with interstate driving.

Re: 2004 Camry mileage

This does sound low to me also. I am driving a 04 XLE with the 4 in it. I am getting about 26 in town. Just brought it back from a 700 mile trip through california to arizona and got about 37 on the highway. Like they said, the air filter may be a big part. If you are in a really dusty area, I would say take it a knock the dirt off of it every 5k or oil change. I am also running syntec oil, and have heard that it also makes a difference. Just another thought for you to think of.
