Question HELP! S10 Oil pan gasket

anyone know an easy way to change the oil pan gasket on a '96 4.3L Vortec 4WD/ZR2? I've heard something about having to lift the engine up to do this....I hope there is another way? HELP!!!

Re: HELP! S10 Oil pan gasket

That is true if you replace the pan gasket. However, a temporary fix is to find exactly where it is leaking and put some liquid gasket material over the area where the leak is. Make sure you find where the leak is starting and not where it drips. I have done this to my oil pan, and so far it is working; but I know i have to do it right at some point.

To change the gasket:

Remove the motor mount bolts...
Remove the transmission cover
Remove the starter
Jack up the engine as far as it will go
Loosen the 2 bottom timing chain cover bolts
Drain the oil...
Remove all pan bolts
The front of the pan will be RTV's next to the timing chain cover
Pan will drop several inches... Work gasket out (you will have to work it off the dip stick tube...

Install in reverse...Make sure you scrape and replace the rtv at the front of the pan where it meets the timing cover or you will leak...
