i don't know of many manufacters who make the dual exhaust, except maybe magnaflow. i think most people just do a custom exhaust. but most of the time, you will lose horsepower with a dual exhaust

yup he's right, no manufacture makes a dual exhaust system, ur gunna have to go custom, Do u have after market headers cuz if u do, y dont u just get straight pipes, make it dual running each pipe from each header since its a v-6.

Re: dual exhaust for 01' Eclipse GT?

you have to have some backpressure when the exhaust is coming out of the muffler. with stock, you have too much backpressure. when you go with an aftermarket exhaust, you relieve some of that backpressure but no all of it. with a dual exhaust, you lose pretty much all of it, and then you will start to lose power.

im sure johnnyb can help you out on this one. hes pretty good about this stuff.

Re: dual exhaust for 01' Eclipse GT?

on a true dual exhaust, you will lose power. The engine simply does not provide enough exhaust backpressure or velocity to warrant needing dual exhaust.

On naturally aspirated engines, backpressure is a necessary item. Backpressure and piping diameter create exhaust velocity. By making an exhaust too large, you will lose your back pressure and exhaust velocity. That will result in lost power.

Forced induction engines are a different beast though. Because of the excess amount of exhaust gases, the gases must be expelled from the piping as quick as possible, turbo'ed engines especially. Truly, the best exhaust for a turbo'ed engine is none at all.

me and one of my buddies were talking about dual exhaust for my 2001 eclipse GT and we were talking about how a good true dual; exhaust would be better, he said instead of straight pipe, he said either a H pipe or an X pipe the way Corvettes come. That way gives u more power. The H pipe also adds a deeper sound but an H pipe works strange the way it does sumthin to the exhaust creating a lil vertex or tornado pushing more power

Re: dual exhaust for 01' Eclipse GT?

The Corvette motor is almost twice as big as the V6 motor, the 6G72. Plus, the Vette was designed to have true dual exhaust. The 3G was not. You cannot apply the same principles of power that work on a Corvette to that of a 3G. It simply does not work. The Vette has much more exhaust gas than the 6G72.

I know a V-6 Mustang isnt the same as the V-6 Eclipse but how come the H-Pipe design and X-Pipe is proven to give a HP gain to it if its Only "for Corvettes since they have more exhaust gas". Thats not necessary true. The only true way to get more performance out of an exhaust is to have mandrel bend pipes and have less restrictions

Re: dual exhaust for 01' Eclipse GT?

It is not "only for corvette's", but I used vettes as an example. Larger displacement engines need different design exhaust. And each OEM maker and aftermarket manufacturer has different specs when designing exhausts. The V6 in the Stang is a 3.8L, and if it does have a true dual exhaust, the pipes must be the proper size for maximum effciency.

In addition, the cars designed to run dual exhausts have the space provided for them as part of the underbody. If you look under the Eclipse, you will see no such design in the underbody to allow for true dual exhaust.

Would it be a good idea to increase the diameter of exhaust piping for my 01 eclipse gt? and if so, what's a good size to go to? -thanks

Re: dual exhaust for 01' Eclipse GT?

No. The exhaust system in the 3G is quite good, with the exception being the muffler. That it why cat-backs only gain 3-4whp on these cars.

If you are going to be either supercharged or tubocharged, I do suggest you increase your piping size to a 3" exhaust.

ok, well as you may know from one of my posts my car has a greddy muffler on it. Though I don't konw what model it is because it came with the car. But do you think that's sufficiant for the exhaust system as far as piping and muffler goes or is there anything else I can do for better results?

Re: dual exhaust for 01' Eclipse GT?

That is the best choice for the car. I cannot recommend anything different for you.

You best bet now would be to get spark plugs wires, some suspension mods, headers, and dyno tuning. Not in that order, of course.
