2001 Impala LS - Pocket in back of driver's seat?
Would owners of the 2001 Impala LS with Sport Cloth Seating do me a favor and check the back of the driver's seat? Is there a pocket there that matches the pocket on the back of the passenger seat?
The reason I ask is I think my dealer just switched out my seatback. A few days ago I took the car in because the seat moved when I accelerated or braked. They told me to come back next week for the repair after they'd ordered a part. When I got the car home today, the seat back looked funny. It was sagging and there was no pocket -- and I could have sworn there was one. But I need confirmation. I checked the original sticker and the 2001 brochure, and neither says anything about pockets. A May 2000 article in Consumer Reports on the LS states there are "deep pockets [plural] behind the front seats [plural]." A few websites say the current LS has only a pocket behind the passenger seat. Any help would be appreciated P.S. I don't think I'll buy another GM car. I've had lots of the same problems others have had -- a bum subframe, various shorts, clunks, something that sounded like cracking ice, and on and on. My dealer has been very cooperative and fixed all these problems, while the car was under warranty and now is under a GMAC service contract -- which has already paid for itself. But the car is aging badly after only 3 1/2 years and 32,000 miles, the main problem being noise, harshness, and vibration. It's like I'm driving a Model T. |

I have confirmed that there should be a pocket on the back of the drivers seat the same as the passenger side. I have a 2000 Impala with the sport cloth. Both sides have the pocket. |

Thanks, Shadow 78, for your reply. Whew! It's good to know I didn't hallucinate that pocket.
If anyone else has a confirmation, please write in, especially if you have a 2001 LS with Sports Cloth Seating. The dealer hasn't responded one way or another since I mentioned this to them. |

I have a 2001 Impala with the cloth seats. The only pocket in the back is on the back of the passenger seat. I do not know if it is different in the 2000 or not. My car was originally produced in Canada though, all the gauge readouts are Canadian vs. the US displays so I do not know if anything else is different or not. I just know that the driver seat in my 01 does NOT have a pocket on the back, sorry

Thanks for your input, AW. Either I'm completely wrong, or some 2001 LS models had a back pocket like the 2000 models and some didn't.
I'm sure you've already taken this into consideration, but just to confirm -- is your 2001 Impala an LS? The ImpalaLS badge would be on the doors or trunk. Bucket seats were standard in the 2001 LS but an option (I think) in the base model; most of the base models I looked at had bench seating. The LS has a powered, six-way adjustable driver's seat -- and lumbar support, which is manually adjusted with a knob on the side of the seat bottom. The Sports Cloth Seating also came standard with one side airbag in the driver's seatback. My car was made in Canada too but I'm not sure what you mean that all your "gauge readouts are Canadian vs. the US displays." Something to do with kilometres vs. miles on the speedometer? Anyway, thanks again for responding. |

I think mine is just the Sedan not an LS. There are no discreptive logo's on it. I do have the following:
6-way power seats Sport Cloth Seat Covers Power Windows, doors and trunk (with popper) Manually adjustable Lumbar Support RDS Radio Split Bench seat with middle fold down console Police Pkg. As far as the Canadian readout gauges, my owners manual shows to sets for the "idiot" gauges on the dash. Vehicles made for US all have gauges with Text (or text with pic) warnings. Examples- "Low Washer Fluid" "Change Engine Oil" and "Low Fuel" (accompanied by pic of fuel pump. The vehicles made for Canada all have Graphic only displays, which is what mine has. The same examples as above, Picture of windshield with dashed washer fluid in use Picture of dripping oil can with wrench underneath it and Picture of fuel pump. Had I not been flipping through my owners manual to find what the picture of a Car with a padlock through it meant (passlock security gauge) I wouldn't have realized there were two sets either. Hope this helps. AW |

AW,
Thanks for your reply. I wasn't aware that Canadian gauges had only pictures. Was that to sidestep the Canadian law that requires signage be in French and English? I wonder if NAFTA will eventually cause GM give up on all text -- though you'd think in this day and age a driver could program the dashboard gauges to be in English, French, or Spanish, as you do with a DVD. From your description of your car, you don't have an LS. In this country at least you couldn't get a 2001 Impala LS with bench seating. I know; I was looking for one. What you seem to have is a base model with many of the options found standard on the LS. Once again, thanks for your help. |
