When in gear car sometimes bogs down when gas is depressed. When out of gear I run the rpms up to about 4k and the engine starts to bog down and rpms decrease to about 3k while holding pedal steady. Giving it more gas when this happens makes it want to start to stall. I have burned a tank of gas with Dupont cleaner added. Gas filter was replaced before adding cleaner. Boost gauge seems to be acting normally. Bogging down while driving usually occurs when boost reads above 0. I have not added anything that would take water out of the tank. I believe the air filter is good. This happens intermittently and is not linked to any certain level of gas in the tank. Any ideas?

Re: 92 SSEI bogs down at 4k rpm
this could all depend on how many miles you have as well. I have a 95 SSEi with 150K, and mine as well will intermittenly seem to bog down at higher revs. this could just be in fact to the age of the engine, or, more realistically, the age of the transmission. the 3800 and 3800 superchaged are absolute dynamite engines, and will long outlast the transmissions they're coupled to. especially taking into effect that the transmission is the same for both engines....GM has had problems with the transmissions on supercharged engines before, so if I were you, I would get your trans. oil changed, then see if that helps (about 60-80 bucks)
as to the out of gear 4k limit, that is programmed into the computer. its the governor that you will run into in both reverse, park, and neutral. this is so if you forget that you arent in drive, you won't blow the motor by revving it up 'trying' to accelerate |

Re: 92 SSEI bogs down at 4k rpm
I have about 204K on the motor. Supercharger bearing went out at about 175K, so I have a rebuild. Transmission was changed at about 150K. The bogging is more pronounced at higher revs., but when it starts doing it, giving it gas, even at lower rpm's causes it to want to stall. One time, I couldn't keep the car running and it stalled at low speed. I started it back up and limped home. Later it was ok. It doesn't seem the trans. is under strain when this occurs but I will change fluid (it's about time anyway). The spark wires and plugs have about 100K on them but no missing.

Re: 92 SSEI bogs down at 4k rpm
something else you might look into....
cars with the 3800 are notorious for sending fuel pumps packing, i had mine go out this past summer. if thats the case, there isnt much you can do besides bite the bullet and have it done. It is a very difficult process at best. they have to cut the straps on the gastank (a tricky task to do with a torch, or grinder, or anything that makes sparks because of the gas), and drop the tank to get to the pump. it cost me about $400, but if you don;t want to result to that, check out getting the fuel filter replaced as well.....i dont remember if that is in-tank as well, but if not that would be a very cheap replacement |

If I were you I would at least change the spark plugs and wires before doing a fuel pump. When I bought my SSEI the plugs on it had about 100k. It idled beautifully and drove great around town, but when I got on the highway oh man did bog right out under any load or boost. Take my word for after 100K you need them. Its was like night and day! |

Re: 92 SSEI bogs down at 4k rpm
Thanks. It seems to be doing better now, but I will do plugs and wires soon.
