power or what?

hey everybody, i just got myself my first car and guess what it was...
and 89 240. i already replaced the window regulator on the driver window and i had the electrical done for the entire rear end and its all good now...

now for my question, shes a deusy and a long one so hold on.

im new to 5 spd, but im used to it now and for some reason if i try to spin the tires i get no results. i can drop the clutch as hard as i want from anywhere from 4-6000 rpm in first and still not even get a squeal.
now my car came with 17" rims and lo profile tires so i have pretty good traction but i dont think that could be the culprit.
your all thinking right now that my clutch is shit, but i tested that too, i did the lug test and had my dad drive it around and some other people as well as 2 friends that have had the exact same car who both say they can get their 240 to spin its tires right into 3rd gear... . but i do manage to make it stink when i ride the hell out of it (does not happen very much.)

now since the 240's have a hydraulic clutch, is there still an adjustor? or is there any way that an adjustor could change this situation.

if anybody could email me or message me or even leave some help here for me that would be nuts.

thanks for readin this boring story, ill try and get some pics of my new baby up soon.

When I first got my 240 I had a lot of trouble breaking the tires loose, as it turned out I was just not releasing the clutch fast enough, my natural instinct to feather the clutch out always stoped it from happining. One day I just got pissed off at it, took my left shoe off, held the clutch down with the tip of my toe, and slid my foot off the clutch, at 3500rpm's I left about a 15 foot mark on the ground (only one =( ) after that I just got used to doing it. My clutch was pretty beat up too, fifth gear was slipping on the free way under daily driving routines.

Go back and try it again, slide your foot off and you should get a nice chirp.

Edit: 4-6K rpms is VERY high for a peel out, your tires will chirp at 2000 if you pop the clutch fast enough. At 4-6K even a replaced clutch will probably not grab.

Edit edit: crap that was suposed to be an edit >=(

Re: power or what?

i understand all that, but ive had 2 other people with the same car try and peel it and they've had no success. also, a lot of people have said that my clutch is very sloppy. like it has about an inch of slack at the top point where you can just wiggle it around. i bled it today, but i dont think that would do it. what im planning now is to let friends learn 5 spd on my car and just throw a new clutch in it in roughly 2 months. but hey ya never know...

Try tightening the pedal, usually its better to have it sit a little lower with less travel.

get a shoe lace and tie your foot to the clutch pedal. Instead of releasing the clutch yank your foot up faster than the pedal can normaly raise. It really does sound like your clutch is just, well old and worn.

Describe the slack a little better, are you saying there is an inch of play before the clutch engages, or that fully engaging the clutch takes an inch of movement. Also explain exactly what happens when you pop the clutch, does it engage?

Re: power or what?

I popped the clutch on my girlfriend 83 corolla and it didn't do shit. It doesn't have a tach so I guess from the noise it was making it was maybe 3k RPM. I didn't just pop it, I sidestepped the sucker, and it just launched like it was driving along normal like. I would also like to note that for some reason I could never get the car to move with just letting the clutch out, it would jerk forward and stall, so popping it is the only way I could get my newb ass to drive the damn thing.

Usualy you can't peel out because your clutch is worn out and old, replacing it will take care of it.
