Question 99 Bonnieville SE

I've raced on 2 occasions on 1/8th mile track. My car did ok the 1st wk, but I did lousy the 2nd wk. My father-in-law says it has something to do with the on-board computer. We did a check in idle and the car started cuttin out at 42 rpm. I've been told there's some type of programing device that I need to set the max rpm's up during racing and then back down to factory settings while street driving. Someone please help a newbie!
