1998 Nissan Maxima Fuel Filter

Does anyone have suggestions for changing a fuel filter on a 1998 Nissan Maxima? This is coming from someone who has little experience but would like to learn a little more about changing certain parts.

Is the car running poorly because of the fuel filter?

Re: 1998 Nissan Maxima Fuel Filter

Here's basically how you do it, if you need help with any of it feel free to let me know.
1. Pull the fuel pump fuse, it's under the dash on the driver's side by your left knee, pull up the little panel and it will tell you which one it is.
2. Try to turn on the car, it should stall pretty quickly.
3. Try turning it on a few more times to get all the pressure out of the fuel lines.
4. Disconnect the battery (not sure if it's completely necessary, I'd do it anyway just for good measure).
5. Put some paper towels under the car to keep gas from spilling, and where chemical resistant gloves if you don't want gas on your hands.
6. Unscrew the hose clamp on the top of the filter, you need a stubby phillips head screwdriver, then pull the fuel line off the top once you've got the hose clamp off.
7. Pop the filter out of the spring bracket holding it in place, it should drop down a bit and be easier to get to (if you want you can jack the car up and do the rest from underneath, but you don't have to)
8. Unscrew the hose clamp on the bottom and pull that hose off, remember which hose is which (it's hard to get them mixed up)
9. Put the new filter in the same way the old one was, use the same hoses and hose clamps and pop it back into the bracket.
10. Put the fuse back, reconnect the battery, and you're good to go.

Don't worry if it doesn't start the first time, just keep trying. Check for leaks when you're done. Good luck!

Re: 1998 Nissan Maxima Fuel Filter

I have just purchased a fuel filter to replace the old one. However I cannot find where it is located? I just bought it last week. Can someone provide a description where I can find it?

Good timing. I just replaced my fuel filter on my 95 maxima last week. It's a fun little task. The directions given are right on. I only did one other thing that made the job twice as easy. I took off the air duct hosing to open up some room to work on getting the fuel filter out. If you have the new part you should be able to identify the one on the car pretty easily. When you are looking at the engine it is to the right of it against the back wall of the car, down about 10 inches. it is held in a clamp. The air hosing can be taken off in about a minute with a screw driver and a wrench. Just remember how it fits in. I think you only need to losen up two screw clamps and around 3 pressure clamps. Let me know how it goes.
