every car backfires. Its just that now you don't have the amount of sound suppression material you had before.

I'm interested too b/c I have the same dilema as logik23 in that I have KA now, but don't know what I want to do engine wise (sr,rb,ca,kat) in the future.
I bought an Apexi and it works pretty well on the KA. Get something cheap if you are not sure or wait until you finish the engine setup.

Re: Exhaust Question

Backfires occur because unburnt fuel remains in the combustion chaimber due the fact that the throttle body is closed. This causes a lack of air. When the combustion chaimber draws enough air past the throttle blade, it causes a large explosion because of the larger than normal amount of fuel. The cat only took away some of the sound suppression and maybe made for a little better flow. Your car back fired before, you just couldn't hear it.

Re: Exhaust Question

my car has audible back fires right now, but thats cuz there are gaps at every joint, such as from the piping to the cat. also, i dont really have a muffler right now, so it backfires like a son of a bitch sometimes, freaks me out

I think all big name exhaust for the 240SX (JIC, HKS, Blitz, Apex'i, etc.) we're made to fit the SR and coincidentally, they fit the KA.
