Question Nice little challenge for all you "experts" out there...(motor problems)

Alright, i own an 86 mk2 4 door shitbox golf. its the 8 valve gas motor with a 5 speed to boot. When i first got it in january it had a little "trouble" you might say. So i had the fuel lines from the tank to the front replaced (they froze in winter), new thermostat, new plugs, wires, battery, air filter, and a new vacuum hose. The new hose caused my idle to drop from about 2500 rpm to around 1000 (the old one had like a 3 inch gash in it). The idle adjustment screw had been shut the whole time the bad hose was on so when the new one was put on the motor would die with the screw fully closed. So i would adjust it and it would run good. Over an extended time of driving it, it would shut itself shut and the motor would die. I keep a screw driver with me at all times to make adjustments as needed, not that big a deal. Well lately, like last month and 1/2 to 2 months the screw hasnt really moved and the motor has been running good.

This morning all hell broke loose. I get the car started, rev it up like i normally do to get it goin good, and then back it out of the driveway no problem. Then I throw it into first and as i get goin down the road and the car starts jumpin, and i mean JUMPING. I give it constant gas and the thing goes, stops, goes, stops, goes, stops (but when it stops its not the gears jumping out and the motor revs, but more like the engine is getting no throttle and engine breaking or slowing down). So i throw it into 2nd and the same shit happens: go, stop, go, stop....So i get to a stop sign in my neighborhood and put it in neutral and the thing dies. So i fire it back up and it dies again. So i put on the flashers and screw driver in hand go to the idle screw (car off) and its PERFECT. So i close the screw shut and then re-open it, jump in the car and it still wont idle. So i say Fuck it and decide to U-turn it and go back home.

Well i get the car on again and i keep the revs around 4000 rpm and try first, ( i dont drop the clutch or anything, just kinda half clutchin it), and it still wont go normal, so i try 2nd, still shit, so i try 3rd. BINGO, its goes, but not that great and i have to keep the revs up. Get it home and call a friend to get me to work. I get home aroun 545 pm (CST) and see what i can. Well still jumps, car wont idle, and it has really, really SHITTY throttle response. I call my best friend who's at mechanic school and his thinking is Fuel injectors. Im thinking its either fuel or electrical delivery but not certain on which part, pretty sure the tranny has nothing to do with this because whether in gear or out its still shitty. Any of you guys have any input it'd be greatly appreciated. THANKS!

Low fuel pressure, from a bad pump. Probably the transfer pump, located in the fuel tank. In a Golf, though, it's easy to get to, though an accress plate under the back seat. It takes maybe 30 minutes to open the plate, take the old pump off, put the new one in, and get it all back together.
