Re: clunk in steering column
I have a 99 Silverado and the dealer replaced the steering shaft on it twice. The shaft that was replaced is between the firewall and gear box.

Check with GM, just had a recall on my '04. Seems the steering shaft assembly that holds the grease has a bad tendancy to crack and loose all lubrication, causing grinding sound and popping. One recall does it all. $70 free fix from dealership, takes about an hour for the guys to fix.

Re: clunk in steering column
If your truck is out of warranty and you want to repair the clunk yourself you can get the intermediate shaft grease kit from the GMDieselTech.com.
Go here for complete instructions and text of the Intermediate Steering Shaft Clunk TSB (need to register with this site to view) This is a common problem.. My 2500HD started clunking during slow speed turns at about 18Kmiles. Had the grease job and its been OK so far.
