parking brake light stays on

98 winstar parking brake light in the dash stays on no matter what, I have cheked fuses, the handle is all of the way down, when up light is slightly brighter. Several people have looked at brakes and say nothing is wrong.

Re: parking light stays on

Do you have Daytime Running Lights installed? If so, there may be a problem with the module that is causing the PB light to remain on. The DRLs are activated only when the PB is released, so the PB switch is connected to the DRL module.

Re: parking light stays on

Are you talking parking lights or brake lights? If parking lights, what handle are you talking about?

Re: parking light stays on

OK One more question. Do you speak of the brake lights themselves, as in the rear end, or the little brake on/problem indicator in the dash?

Sorry, I read right over that bit of information. Off in La La land again. Anyway, if you have made certain the parking brake lever is indeed in it's normal positon and the light is staying on then a check of the fluid level is in order. If the level is ok then, according to Haynes, you may have a problem with ABS system. This situation would occur if the system determines that the ABS light (in the dash) is for some reason malfunctioning. Sort of a back up reserve type thing I guess.

Re: parking light stays on

I did not know the red brake light is a yellow ABS light backup. (good to know)

To the original poster. Does the yellow ABS light up upon start up? This will determine if the light is working and the ABS has tested and passed.

I would say that you either need brake fluid, The switch in the parking brake lever is stuck or there is a problem with the fluid level switch in the resevoir.
Or that your parking brake does not release.

Since the problem started after having rear brake work I would suggest checking the fluid. Usually A brake shoe replacement causes an excess of fluid as the pistons are now further back due to increase shoe thickness of the new shoes but if they bled the brakes they may not have added enough.

Also the rear brakes are directly connected to the parking brake level and perhaps it is slightly out of adjustment. Ususally the first notch of parking brake movement will illuminate the light but not actually apply the parking brake.
