stalls and dies

I have a 1991 K2500. It will start for 2 sec. and die, if I do this a number of times it will start and run fine. Some times it takes 3-4 tries to get it started and sometimes as many as 10 tries. I replaced the fuel pump and filter about 6 weeks ago.

I'm not sure if it's fuel or spark related. It sounds like all spark just shuts off, but who knows. Any ideas of where to start?

Thanks.....Pat

Re: stalls and dies

O.K. it's not the fuel pump. I bypassed it with direct power and still same. I'm thinking it's the ignition control module or the ecm - Which would you replace first? Thanks..Pat

Re: stalls and dies

I have a 93 K1500 Suburban and it will strat for a few minutes and then die, Originally the I thought the module was bad So Ichanged it and it was fine for about a week, Then did the same. Changed Distributor, Coil, AIC Valve, fuel pump relay, Cap & rotor, Now will start for about 2 mins and die, The fuel pump runs intermittantly and is not a constant buzz but sounds gurgled, I have tried a fuel system test because I don't have the tools, Any Ideas folks, I 'm at my wits end with this truck.

Replace the fuel pump....my Carter replacement from Napa 1 year ago turned out to be the culprit. Putting it in is not my idea of fun, but could be worse I suppose.

Re: stalls and dies

That is what I figured If I bang on the tank it will run a little better but not consistant, When I have time I will change or have it towed to a friends shop and let him drop the tank. Thanks for the insight.

Re: stalls and dies

I changed fuel pump out and now the truck runs fine, Had a frined drop the tank and replace the actual pump itself & the strainer. Truck runs good he even test drove it and had no issues except that it would intermittently, lope on idle when in gear and then surge causing the truck to lurch almost stalling, What the heck is wrong with this beast! No code reader for codes & my "check engine" or "service soon" lights are not on.

Re: stalls and dies

For a starter, remove and clean your Idle Air Control (AIC).

Re: stalls and dies

Thanks But I have replaced in over the last 2 mo's with new parts the AIC valve, the complete distrubutor(module & pickup coil), coil, cap & rotor, Fuel Pump relay, Fuel pump & strainer, Fuel Filter, PVC filter, cleaned the K& N filter, checked ignition wires and cleaned some grounds, Still does the same damn lope in the idle intermittantly when in gear? All I have left in my opinion is the TPS & FPR? Or else what?

Re: stalls and dies

The TPS in a '91, if it is the original, could very well be the culprit. Do you have access to a scanner that will read the data stream? If you do, then you can check it. If you don't, you could shotgun it and change it.

Re: stalls and dies

No scanner but I have a friend that can hook it up to a diagnostic computer, No "check engine lights" either. It's 93 not sure how different than a 91? Will try to clean the TPS if it looks worn will buy a new one?

Re: stalls and dies

Can't be cleaned, it is a sealed unit. '93 not much different than the '91. The TPS sensor will not always give a code. What happens is that the sensor wears where it travels the most, that is usually at the low end, idle to half position, ergo, that is where it will go bad.

If you could read the data stream, the TPS voltage should never exceed 1 Volt. Nominally, you will see it somewhere between .4 and .7

Re: stalls and dies

I've got similar problem on my Chev 3500 flat bed. Occasionally is just dies. When it dies- everything goes dead and there is no power to anything. The last time it did it, it wouldn't start for about 2 minutes and when it did start it died again. After it started again, it ran fine for the rest of the afternoon.
