98 Tahoe AC Compressor Noise.

I have a 98 Tahoe with 92,000 miles on it.When I turn on the AC now the compressor makes a grrring noise when it runs, I spoke with a Mechanic and he said this is common on chevy's has any one else heard of this? He also indicated that the compressor could be on its way out or it may just stay with that sound until it eventually does break, the nose it very irritating. Has any one else had anything like this? I just find it odd as I hve never had any problems withthe Ac before and I continue to run it for periods of time in the winter so everything remains lubricated.

Any help would be appreciated.
