learning about nissans ok people let see who know

y do you have to remove the head to change the cam on a SOHC on a 1989 4cyl nissan motor

umm maybe because the sohc is located under the head durfff.. hello S.O.H.C. damm newbiesss.. go back to HONDA 101 sec.VTEC..

huh? i had a sohc vtec civic, all i have to do was remove the valve cover and there was my cam under the rockers and shit. why would you have to remove the head?

Where did you hear that you had to remove the head? Like grncivicdhr said, remove the valve cover and there is the cam.

Unless there is something I don't know on any OHC be it single or Double you only take out the valve cover, unless there is something I don't know about that engine.

nope just valve cover and they sit right there its not hard like the OHV motors.

oh ya i just took my dohc apart, you dont have to do any thing with the head, were the hell did he hear that from...

edit: If you want to take out the head go ahead....at least you won't have to lean over the car most of the time....more work but you can take out the block if you wanted just to change the head..literally you can do anything..but there would be no point and it would be stupid; which is literally what you would be doing if you removed the head just to change the cams....

reading the repair manual its says to remove the head before removing the bolts for the cam

Wierd, I've never heard of or seen it done like that. I don't see why you would need to remove the head to get the camshaft out since it is pretty much just sitting right there under the valve cover.

what repair manual are you looking at? most of the time hayes and chilton is vague....

If you check out the FSM(factory service manual) it shows pictures as well as words that you take off the valve cover then the cam sprockets.
