freehand sketches and thumbnails from models and photos

here is a sketch that features in the f/g a 1969 Datsun roadster with a Ferrari 550 Maranello in the b/g. the roadster is derived from several reference photographs, ie, the wide-angle view i created does not exist as a photograph. i created what i think the car may look like from that angle with a short lens.

the ferrari is from a die-cast model and drawn with less detail and precision. the sketch is a layout drawing for a finished piece in the planning stages.

R32 skyline thumbnail from a model

this R32 thumbnail is a rapid-fire sketch derived from a model. it lacks detail and finesse and exists as a quick visualization for an angle.

were i to take it further, i'd look at the model again with greater scrutiny, possibly photographing it for maximum clarity of accuracy when drawing it.

as far as i can see, tracing a photograph or eyeballing it would render nearly the same results. except the former would save time under a deadline.

Thankyou for proving a point that I have tried to make many a time! I like the Datsun

Are you going to finish those drawings?

Re: freehand sketches and thumbnails from models and photos

Ra_15, i will probably finish the roadster scene. that one is on the front-burner in my mind. r32 is just an angle. it may crop up later, probably among other cars, too.

as far as i am concerned, if i draw something when i look at it, i am tracing it with my eyes, as if i am cheating. so to trace it outright is the same. drawing something completely from the imagination without any aids is far more advanced a skill, IMHO.

actually, tracing *directly* often gives LESS accuracy because i lose details when i overlap vellum onto a photo! i must then go back over the general tracing and dial it in by eyeballing all of the details that are lost in the tracing.

when i directly trace, then, it is most often to get the general *proportions* and not the details.
