Believe me, i know how annoying noise questions are on a forum like this; but i've got specific details that i think you guys will be able to use to help me solve my problem:
1)A thump that i believe corresponds to every rotation of one of the wheels on the left side. When accelerating the tempo accelerates and when slowing the tempo slows. Only happens as car is moving.
2)especially when i've got people riding in the back (more weight)
3)goes away after 10 miles or so of driving
4)is very loud in the cabin and out
5)goes away on left turns, is in full force on right turns and is noticeable when going strait.
6)sounds like a long piece of plastic whapping against a gear, kind of like a baseball card in a bike spoke.

The only explanation i can come up with is that the culprit resides inside the rear differential. I don't know why it goes away after a while, or what could be making that noise. I think that it has to do with the diff because of the impact turning has on the noise. I first noted this after i put my car on jacks to do a simple tire rotation and brake check. I used the rear diff to jack the rear of the car up for stands, i only tell you these details because i think they might be relevant in solving the crime.

I don't think jacking the car by the rear diff would have any adverse effects, since I have done that thousands of times.

When you say you rotated your tires and check your brakes, what exactly did you do? Did you rotates you tires from side to side or front to back? Did you adjust the rear brakes by the self adjusters?

Have you put the car back up on stands yet to try and pin point its exact origin?

I did the rear wheel crosses and goes to front and fronts go strait back rotation pattern. I just looked at the front disks and i didn't bother with the rear drums. It's tough for me to jack my car up at school, but last time i was home for the weekend i had enough time to put it up and remove the rear left and look to see if anything was out of wack. Looked ok. so have you fixed the problem yet?

if not, take a look at the springs.. there will be(or your case lack of) a little rubber bumper (sometimes square, or shaped like an egg, or all kinds of stuff). its called a jouce. what this does is if the car bottem out it hits the rubber bumper and stops metal to metal contact...

also check your ball joints.. they could be loose.

Okay i had the SAME proboem with my 2002. This thupoing noise is coming from your axel. i am 100% sure beause it happend to my car. when i turned the car to thr right the noise stopped. when turning it to the left or going straight it made the noise. the faster i went the less sound it made. i thought it was my calipers so i got new ones, but the problem was still there. so then i got slotted rotors and the problem was still there. so i changed my left rear axel and the problem went away. you said when you turn left it doesnt make the sound so that means you need to change your right rear axel. any questions e-mail me [email protected]
