Stuck 81 hood now what?

The hood on my 81 won't open. When I pull the hood release handle the right side of the hood releases and pops up but the left side does not. I can't figure out how to get the left side open. Help me

My 79 just did the same thing, except the drivers side came up and the passenger did not. All I did was look to see how the cable functioned, then grabbed ahold of the cable with a pair of pliers (the cable, not the shield) and pull. Then I removed the hood until I replace the cable.
