Advantages and disadvantages of an airbrush

I'm thinking about getting an airbrush but I'm wondering if it's worth it or not. What can I do with it that I can't use with a spraycan? And of course I need the advantages and disadvantages. Thanks.

Re: Advantages and disadvantages of an airbrush

Of the cons raab mentioned I'd actually say the airbrish can cave you money. The cost of rattle cans can build up quickly they and waste a lot of paint. By using an airbrush you'll waste less paint, might take a while, but you'll eventually break even and come out ahead.
Cleaning isn't that bad, even brushes have to be cleaned and rattle cans have to be shaken and warmed. So timewise it's not a biggie.
If you've got the dosh then virtually silent compresors are available, expensive though...

Advantages are many and varied, use your imagination

It's this simple, if you learn how and start using one you won't go back to the can. I will use Spray cans for bodies and chassis but for everything else I use the airbrush. Your models will look cleaner and more realistic using an airbrush.

Re: Advantages and disadvantages of an airbrush

PROS:
Detail painting and weathering!
CONS:
But it takes a while to clean the airbrush and cleaning should be done perfect. It takes between 15-30 minutes to properly clean the airbrush

plus everything written above.

Nice job guys. I have like $57 so I'm going to go look for an airbrush. I heard somewhere about using nail polish. Is this possible?

Go with the Aztek. It's a great first airbrush and much easier to clean as you really don't need to disassemble the interchangeable tips (although I do). It's also got a lifetime warranty which is nice to have when you're first starting out. As for an air source I'd go with an airtank. One that can be refilled at your local gas station and later go with a silent (i.e. refrigerator) compressor and an Iwata.

hth,

Bill
