how do i kno if i have a Dana 44 on my TJ?

i have a 1997 4.0L AUTOMATIC-transWrangler SPORT

not sure what kind of front or rear end i have....
i read this article that says the DANA 44 was an available option
on this TJ model .... but was not standard

i found this cool DANA 44 upgrade tech article for anyone interested
http://whitesahara.myjeeppage.com/Performance.htm

but since i have the Automatic trans i dunno if i should be doing any offroading anyways......

i have a DAYSTAR 1 & 3/4" inch spacer kit suspension lift i got from JCwhitney.com.........and i'm going to be getting some 32X11.50 Goodyear MTR's.........not sure if my stock set up is going to be able to handle this........im thinking i want to upgrade the gearing since the power loss will not be something i want.....

any advise or comments appreciated

Look at the tags on differential closely. It should say. The D44 was offered with lower gears. 3.73. I believe the only way to get the 3.73 was to order them in the D44 axles. If the tag says 3.73 on it in the upper left then you have the D44. The 44 on that Jeep seems to have a lot of ribbing for strength compared to other 44s that I've seen. The 35 has a very oval case compaired to the 44 I believe. It would have had to come with Grizzly wheels with 30" tires I believe too. It was all part of a package Jeep offered. Hope that helps.

D44's have a screw in plug in the diff cover and D35 axles will have a rubber plug.

You can wheel an auto Jeep just fine.
