Oil filter?
Hi Folks,
I'm curious to find out what oil filter you're using? I recently switched to Mobil1 and have been doing my own oil changes...after a long hiatus. I've been using Fram filters, but have heard some very negative things about them. Any other good options out there....for less than $10/filter? Thank in advance. Take care, Jerry |

Re: Oil filter?
I use Toyota filters only, because they have a check valve in them to stop oil from draining back.

Re: Oil filter?
Fram is the manufacturer of genuine parts for many auto makers. So, I would say their quality should be good.

Re: Oil filter?
The scuderiaciriani.com link I posted above had the following to say (and alot more) about Fram filters:
"Years ago Fram was a quality filter manufacturer. Now their standard filter (the radioactive-orange cans) is one of the worst out there. These filters are manufactured by Allied Signal, Inc. Please do not buy these filters. By boycotting it, we may be able to cause some change. I have personally had one if these filters fail and actually cause engine damage due to bits of paper and glue floating around in the engine." Here's what he has to say about the Fram Double Guard DG8A: "This is a frustrating filter. Please do not buy it. It is one of the most expensive filters you can buy and it is junk. Inside is a basic Fram Extra Guard (PH8A) filter element that has larger diameter holes at the end and has been pre-oiled. You can see this in the picture above (far left). I assume this is to hold the Teflon particles in the filter element before the unit is installed. Don’t put Teflon in your engine. It does not belong there! DuPont does not recommend using their Teflon product in internal combustion engines. Although it has the worst filter element possible (193 sqin), it does have a clever spring-loaded nitrile rubber anti-drainback valve and bypass valve combination. Too bad the rest of the filter is worthless. Please don’t buy this filter! " 'nough said The cheap filters he recommends are AC Delco, Purolator, and Wix. For expensive filters, he likes Mobil 1. He hasn't finished examining Amsoil, K&N and some other brands. |

I still wonder who makes Toyota filters. TRD has expensive filters for many Toyota engines. Whoever has some Toyota filters can be generous and tear one apart and, by matching the description of the filter with those of other brands, see if the internal design matches one of the filters already in the above web site. Since the thread poses the question, I will state that I use Purolator Pure One. Last edited by Brian R.; 05-08-2004 at 04:12 PM. |

Re: Oil filter?
Sorry - I should've quoted the article in my original post. That was the negative feedback I referenced. I may go the Purolator route. I suspect oil doesn't last long enough for me to be overly concerned - I'm pretty religious about changing it. Thanks everyone...
Take care, Jerry |
