2000 GTP A/C intermittenly

I have a 2000 GTP and about 40% of the time when I start the car the outside temp. guage says -30 F and it is nearly 85 F outside. The air conditioner won't work and only blows hot air when it says -30F. After about 15 minutes the temp. increases to -28, -26, -24... and so on to it gets to the actual outside temp. At this point in time the compressor kicks in and the A/C is ice cold. Any suggestions? My dad says that the temp guage and the A/C is totally unrelated. What do you guys think?

Also, the sun roof is factory and it doesn't always close. It gets 95% and then opens back up. Is there an adjustment I need to do? When it does shut, it is flat with the car on the top(Level with the roof of the car)....

Probably it is just you have low on R-134a charge and taking a while to completely cool the inside of the vehicle.
Try putting the AC in MAX and fan at MAX and see if the compressor kicks in and note how long it takes for the AC to cool the inside of the vehicle.

Re: 2000 GTP A/C intermittenly

When the A/C takes a while to kick in or does not kick in at all could be that your gas pressure is low. If it is too low the AC compressor will not engage. If your car has temp control on degrees (like 65 degf setting)on the dash then could be a problem with the sensor at the AC control module. And that is why first is hot and then is cold as the north pole waiting for the sensor to read the correct temp. But it is not supposed to be related to the outside temp sensor.

Re: 2000 GTP A/C intermittenly

It doesn't kick in at all when my temp is in the negative. It is really 90 degrees and the temp. guage reads negative. I just looked at the link above and in the shop manual to confirm that the information is correct. Thanks GhostLake, that was the link I needed!

When the ambient temp. sensor is bad, it won't allow the compressor clutch to kick in when it is under 38F unless the defrost is on. This explains exactly what my car is doing.

I will get the sensor monday and update you all to see if it worked out!

Well, my mistake. I forgot that the outside temp sensor is also the one used for the AC unit to determine id the AC should kick in or not. Sorry
