Lugging the engine is bad, you should have used a lower gear to up hill. Yugos, like alot of small european cars, love to be revved. The Yugo is no less powerfull than a Geo Metro, and even featured one more cylinder than the Metro, shouldn't have had a problem going uphill, unless the engine wasn't broken in yet.
