96 Accord LX F22 or H22????

I have a 96 Accord LX, everything is stock. I am looking to start upgrading my cars performance and have heard H22 is the engine to get for my ride. I've also heard that you can upgrade the F22 for cheaper and it will be lighter. Suggestions?

Also, I have an automatic, should I even waste my time? I don't want to get rid of it, but do want to make this car move. I've heard that there are upsides to having turbo installed on an automatic. Is this true? Any help would be appreciated. Any other suggestions on how to get the most out of my car would be great too. Thanks.

Re: 96 Accord LX F22 or H22????

if you want a simple way to gain hp ~~ go h22. buy it, put it in.. boom 200 hp vs (i'm assuming you're talking f22b1 motor- i can't double check this as i'm at work and my honda resources are "blocked") 145hp stock hp. you've spent 3,000$ and ready for 8psi max boosting. it's the ideal bolt on, be-done-with-it mod for accord owners. (course you've gotta do some motor mount adjustments and ECU wiring as your car is OBDII but it's not near the time/effort intensive as a full f22 build up)

if you like to get into working on the engine and tinkering i'd suggest the f22. there's parts out there and no more expensive than h22 parts (supply vs demand)... just perhaps less of them.... but not less in quality. boom, you've spent 3-4k$ and ready for boosting ... at this point your f22 can handle way more boost then a stock h22.

it really just depends on what you're wanting to do and how much time/effort you're wanting to invest. ANY motor can be built. At this point, i'd recommend you research and spend some side dough on a good exhaust (Greddy or the A'pexi WSII) and a cold air induction system. then if you still like the honda i say upgrade away.

as for the transmission issue, many people say turbos love automatic transmissions. i can see the logic behind this as you loose less spool up in the shifts... but if it's true ... i don't know.

good luck and i'm sure this post will be followed by the "f22 sucks" posts.

It all depends on what you want. An F22 has more low end power. You'll get better off the line power. An h22 has more top end power. I like my single cam f22. My next car will have the h22 though. But that one is going to be all race and no street. Well sometimes anyway.

Re: 96 Accord LX F22 or H22????

wow, 24 hours and not 1 "f22 sucks" post.... i'm dissapointed in af.com

if what gold'n says is true, i'd say stick with the f22 and build it. since the accord is a mid-size car, it's at a weigh disadvantage to say a compact (civic). so the f22 is gonna help you get off the line faster and you could use a turbo that spooled up a little bit later and make up for the high end power with the turbo. i notice the real meat of the power produced in my accord is between 3500rpm - 5000rpm power band with a stock cam. get a turbo cam with similar power band issue and fit a turbo to be fully spooled within that rpm range and i'd think you'd have a winner with the f22.

1995 Honda Accord LX 2,877 lbs vs 1996 Civic Lx 2,387 lbs .. every second is roughly 4 car lengths... every 100 pounds dropped is roughly 1/10 of a second or better in the 1/4 mile. 490lbs difference (STOCK) that's roughly 1/2 second difference just in the weight.. not factoring in difference of engine (or engine modifications), gear ratios, at/mt, etc...

the first 60 feet can determine a race outcome.

Re: 96 Accord LX F22 or H22????

h22 with tranny is about 40-50lbs heavier than the f22, but it deffinately is a lot more efficient for the money. Go with the h22 unless you just really want to build the f22 and be different.
