I have a 2003 1500 extended cab 4x4 silverado. I was wondering if I changed the speakers in the truck to better speakers , will that increase my volume and improve the sound. Or do I need to upgrade the whole radio/cd player ?? Anyone ever make any changes with factory sterio ?
Thanks for your input. |

Re: sterio sound improvement
you would have to add an amplifier to increase volume. New speakers will be able to handle more power in most cases but you have to be able to generate it to take advantage of this.

Re: sterio sound improvement
if you are looking for louder improved sound you should look at a new amplifier and speakers. The only problem you face is with the head unit. Delco head units are getting nicer and nicer but from an audio output view they are just ok. Sometimes just changing the stock head unit will imrpove the sound on the stock speakers but anything you do in that vehicle requires some sort of modifcation due to either data bus in the head unit or dealing with the stock amp etc.

Re: sterio sound improvement
You can change to an aftermarket reciever and almost instantly improve the sound of your factory speakers. Also..if you want to improve your sound w/aftermarket speakers, and want to keep your factory head unit, you will need to get some speakers with a lower RMS rating and a higher sensitivity rating. They will make better use of your factory cd player. I would replace front and rear speakers at the same time to notice the best increase. I have installed some Pioneer 6.5" in a factory truck and they sounded %100 better.
Sorry for the long post, but I'm in the process of opening my own car-audio shop (part-time right now) and wanna offer all the advice I can!!

Re: sterio sound improvement
I put all new speakers in my 98 silverado with a new Panasonic CD deck. With the amp in the deck the speakers sounded awsome. I then got the CD player stolen and had to put my factory back in. The difference was huge. If your going to put in new speakers I would definitly suggest also putting in a cd player with a good amplifier built in. Otherwise, you might not notice much of a difference in loudness. Maybe only crispness.

Clearly, if you want the best sound, change the head unit, speakers, and install an amp, but if you only want to spend $200 or so, I think you will get more inprovement from amping the factory speakers than from running new speakers off the stock head unit. I have run up to 50 watts (rms) on stock chevy speakers, and the sound quality is actually quite impressive. Just my $.02
