I am not sure if Honda had it first, but many companies use variable valve timing. Just to name a few, porsche/VW, toyota/lexus, BMW, GM, ford..

I remember hearind something about BMW being the first to use a variable valve timing system. Not 100% sure that is true but I remember hearing it from a reputable source.

hmm...that smart valve sounds a lil fishy. theres never a solve-all-your-problems solution, and that claims to be one of them. sounds as fishy as turbonator. if you haven't read up on that, click here: http://turbonator.com/ and have a lil laugh

GM and Toyota were the first to attempt it. BMW might have been the first to use it, but I believe it was right around the same time as Honda, if not after.

BMW (VANOS) was the first to use it. Honda (VTEC) was the first to "market" it.

I dont know if the older preludes are quicker than the newer because i have beaten the 4 gen. with vtec perty bad
