96 Neon coil problems?

the car died on the freeway. we towed it to the house, my brother (an amature mechanic) thought it was losing compression. so we replaced the head gasket (it did need replacing), and a few other gaskets as well.

got it all back together and it still wont start. after lookin all over we tested the coil. according to the chilton book the coil was bad, so we got another one. put it on, didnt run. tested the coil, it was bad. did again, and once more, the coil was bad. its only firing on 2 cylinders.

there are no engine codes, the camshaft and crankshaft sensors have been replaced. my brother also said he had a diag meter run on it and all it said was that the coil is bad.

what can be causing the coil to go bad. i remember when we were puttin it all back together he forgot where one of those silver braided ground wires went, so he attached it to some other place. could that be causing it?

any help would be great, cause the car has been sitting for like 2 months and i really need to get it running.

Nah, a ground is a ground no matter where you put it. I don't know what could be causing it to go bad, but I do know that much. Maybe the ground isn't getting a good connection. Did he clean the area really good before hooking it up?

well we didnt sand it down or anything, but its not filthy..

but would that cause the diag tool to say the coil is bad or keep the coil from running all 4....

we've tested the coils resistance (or somethin, what chiltons said) and it doesnt match that of a good coil....

we've gone through 3, i just have a hard time thinkin they are all bad on arrival (like my brother thinks). we called a mechanic and they suggested towing it to a electrical mechanic ($$$$$$$).

sorry it took so long for me to reply. and thanks for your offer, but i do not need more coils...i needed to find out what was makin the coils not work.

i ended up taking it to a electrical specialist. he rans some tests and told me it was the computer. said the driver for the 2 cylinders that were not firing was bad, needs to be reprogramed. ha.

the guy wanted to charge me $800 bucks to fix it..muwaahahaa.
yeah...right...no thanks...

now that i know its the puter, ill save $400 and do it myself...
$800, to unbolt 4 screws and a plug. dont think so.

its gonna cost around $350 to have it sent off to florida for reprogramming. not $800. utterly rediculous.
