Angry 92 sunbird transmission

92 sunbird transmission will not go in reverse. Have heard that this problem also exists with Corvettes. Is a rebuild necessary? Any linkage to adjust? Goes great in forward.

Thanks

Re: 92 sunbird transmission

I doubt the corvette problem is related, the 2 transmissions have nothing in common, one's a FWD transaxle and the other a RWD transmission. Regardless, are we talking a manual or automatic here?

Why is it I see so many "Proud to be an American" bumper stickers on the backs of cars made in Japan or Korea??????

Sorry for the confusion. We are talking about auto trans. Owner was told by another Sunbird owner that there was a known problem with this car, but she was unable to get him to be more detailed.

Re: 92 sunbird transmission

Your car is equipped with a 3T40 transmission.
You may have a low/reverse return spring that has failed or a cut low/reverse piston seal.
Most likely, the transmission will have to be completely disassembled and inspected.
It would be a good idea to replace all the seals and clutches during reassembly (mostly due to age and mileage), but if inspection deems the clutch material OK, I wouldn't replace the clutches.
