Junk Yard Turbo Kits?

Ok this might seem dumb but im newb,

I have looked for turbo kits for the 92-96 Lude and they cost from $2-3 thousand bills US n I live in Canada so the currency sucks.... and I was wondering if it would be cheap to take a complete turbo kit out of a junk yard car, any car. and use what I could and the other parts to custom make them?

Re: Junk Yard Turbo Kits?

You can custom make a turbo kit, but with junkyard parts it can be bad thing. The main thing you would be able to find at the junkyard is the turbo itself. but a rebuild would be advised. Not a whole lot else will work from the junkyard if you want a good reliable kit. Maybe a intercooler from a starion or a neon srt, but other than that I would just buy things one at a time and get exactly what you want. Also if you plan on building your own kit then I would advise you to stay away from FMU and get hondata or something similar and some larger injectors. See thing that most FMU do is increase fuel pressure in relation to boost, but this is a "rigged" way of suppling the extra fuel required. The best method is to use larger injectors and increase the duty cycle of the injector, the stock injectors are not made to supply that kind of fuel, and will become damaged from the excessive pressure that will be created.

Re: Junk Yard Turbo Kits?

Unless you find a Prelude that has been already fitted with a turbo kit, you won't find many usable things in the junkyard. Downpipes and turbo manifolds will only fit a certain car; and about the only things that are interchangeable have been posted above by whtteg. This is why custom turbo kits are difficult without fabrication skills.

Re: Junk Yard Turbo Kits?

well, if you really wanted to do a junkyard turbo kit without building up your motor i suggest you look into what some guy is doing on honda-tech.com, he is using an f22 block from an old accord which has steel internals stock so it can hold more turbo, putting the dohc vtec head onto it, and then putting a turbo on it(not sure what type or whether or not its a junkyard turbo) but anyhow, this takes some mechanical skills, and if your able to do it, youll be able to have a car that can hold quite a bit of boost for a very low price, plus if you screw up and blow the engine, its just 100 bucks down the drain =)
