How did the BMW 3 Series get its name?

How did the BMW 3 Series get its name? And the rest of the Series cars for that matter? Was there ever a 1, 2, or 4 Series?

Re: How did the BMW 3 Series get its name?

Well, when Klaus, Dieter, and Franz got done designing it, they went across town to the Hof Brau to celebrate. They had a few too many biers before the realized they needed to come up with a name. Well since there were 3 of them and they had already each consumed 3 liters of Munich's finest, they decided the car should be the 3 series.

Actually, there have been a 1 and 2 series before.
Most known are the 203 and 204.

Im assuming they came up for the mane of the 3 series the same way they came up with the 5 series, it was the 3rd series of vehicle they came out with.
