Angry What's that noise???

Hi, I am a mechanical nimnall - but have a question. I have a 98 323i Convertible that is making a loud whining noise with a cold engine start. The device making the noise (sounds like bearings going out in a fan or pump) is located near the firewall on the passenger side of the engine compartment. It is cylindrical, with what appears to be a long air intake hose attached.

The device only seems to run for a few minutes after starting the car, and then turns off. It appears to have no relation to the operation of the car. It does not seem to operate again unless the car has been unused for 8 or more hours.

I used to hear a humming noise in the morning and could hear something shut down after 2 -3 minutes - but did not see a need to find out what it was until it started sounding like it was failing.

Now here is the really stupid question - Anyone know what it is, what it does, and how much it will cost if it goes out?

Thanks for any help.

That is a huge help, since the car also has intermittent erratic RPM and stalling while idling.

Thanks.
