Disconnect o2 sensor -> better performance?
Hi,
My car (99 accord ex 4 cyl) seems to run better the first few minutes but as it gets to normal op temperature, the power and acceleration seem to go down. I was wondering if the 02 sensor is bad and messing things up when the car goes into closed loop( when it reaches normal temperature). Would it be a good idea to just disconnect the o2 sensor and see if the car runs the same even if it warms up, so that I can conclude that the o2 sensor may be the culprit? I know that the CEL will come on but any other issues? Thanks es

No, no mods. The problem started after I had a valve adjustment done to the car. Thy adjusted the valves too tightly. I corrected them back to specs, but that does not seem to have fixed the problem. I am guessing it could be burnt valves...

if everything is a stock honda, I dont see what the prob can be. I'd just let a pro look at it. sorry.

I think running the car without the oxygen sensor will not make the car run better.

|
The whole purpose of the engine sensors is to send information to the ecm. The ecm creates optimum performance using this information.

when my 02 sensor went bad the car would have a weird idle. and then it would ultimatly die. So dont disconnect. Its there for a reason.

The bottom line is it's bad. Pulling the O2 sensor will almost always throw the car into "limp home" mode where it retards the timeing, and really richens the fuel flow, because the ECU now thinks that there is something wrong with the car. It'll cause weird idle, and decreased performance, as well as kill your cat converter much faster because the motor is running much richer on the fuel causing increased emissions.

you need your o2 sensor it maintains your fuel ratio. When the car is cold the 02 is in closed look(.435 v) until it warms up then it goes to .750 to .800v , that is if you are running a 1 wire 1volt o2. The reason your car runs better cold is because the air entering the engine is colder so your car will be faster. Bottom line dont disconnect your 02 or you will run lean
