Had this problem at the stripclub.... lol.... Or at least I *think* it may be the same prob. Check for corrosion on your batt terminals. When my car did it, I had lights, seatbelts, everything, but when I turned the key, there was no clicking or nothing, the lights just dimmed and cut out, then slowly came back on. Course the idiot lights were trying to tell me something, but since I prefer analog guages, I couldn't figure it out.

just happened to mine
I just had the same problem with mine. Started one day and the next day nothing. I replaced the neutral position switch, checked the starter and solenoid, checked the ignition switch, checked the ignition module. Everything looked like it should start but it wasn't. I took it to the garage (shorted the starter to get it going) and they had to replace a switch which was attached to the ignition switch. Perhaps you could call it the ignition switch but I still have the same ignition key. I don't know if this helps. You could try putting the car in neutral and see if it starts (if it does then replace neutral position switch), you could jump power to the little terminal on the solenoid and see if it starts. Good luck and let me know what you find.

I'm having almost the same problem as you. Thing is I was messing around with my MAF/VAF(cant remember for the GT). Instead of inplugging the cord to free the airflow sensor I unscrewed the entire thing from it, pulled it out, realized I shouldn't be doing that a quickly replaced it.
After putting everything back together along with my intake I tried to turn the car on it would turn over but I would get the Fuel Cutout Light. My friend messed with it for a little bit(the cord i messed with earlier) with the VAF disconnected and I got it to start but it seems it only started when I couldn't hear the fuel pump. I can now hear the fuel pump everytime I turn on the car but it sounds like fuel is being dumped back into the tank, it also sounds like fuel is passing through the fuel rail but it could also be air. Hopefully I didn't mess up the VAF(unless there's an upgrade along those lines that I forgot about) and it's just the fuel pump. I can hear it but its never been that loud before and I get the cutoff switch. My friend fiddled with sensor and we got it to almost work without a vacuum. Either the engine is flooded or there's no fuel whatsoever. Those are the symptoms. I don't think its the ignition, but I may find out something this weekend. I'll let you know. |

Don't be misled by the fuel cutout light on the dash... seems to me that light always comes on when you start the car and turns off as soon as it is running... you probably just never paid attention to it before.

That was my thoughts to, Mighty. I told my fiance that I thought it came on everytime I turn on the car. We pushed started it yesterday, and it started and stayed running. He thinks it's the starter or silenoid, or both. I'm hoping it's just the connections. But the hours I work, make it hard to check itout. Hopefully I can get to it tomorrow. I miss drivin my car
But thanks for all the inputs and I will let ya'll know what I find out.

Re: What is wrong with my car, 91 Escort GT?
Have you tried jump starting the car with cables? You may just have a dead battery. It is common to have voltage to operate accessories in the car, but not have enough amps to turn the motor. If it will jump with cables you can probably fix it with a new battery. Easier solution... turn the ignition on the turn on your headlights and wipers. If they both work then you can probably move on to other things, if they don't, your battery is out of juice.
I see someone else already mentioned the neutral safety switch... if your battery checks out ok, you should check this switch next. If both battery and neutral witch check out, you are pretty much assured of a problem at the solenoid. Without the right tools and equipment it may be difficult to check the solenoid, but you can get to it by process of elimination. |

Thanks guys for all the inputs. It turned out it was the starter. At least thats what I'm hoping. It's running fine now. Thanks again.
