Question 98 cavalier cd player install

I have a 1998 cavalier and i want to install a cd player. I would like to know what is involved and how hard it is to install it. I found out that the air bag may deploy and i dont want that to happen. If anyone has any experience with a 98 cavalier radio swap please tell me. thanx

Its really not that hard. I belive there is about 5 screws u have to take out. the first should be in the air vent in the middle of the dash board, the second ur gonna have to take the side panel which attaches to the dashboard itself (should just pop right out), the third is on the passenger side of the car same panel attatched to the dash board, and the final two screws are inside the dash board. After their removed they should just pop out.

Ok. I got that part, but what if the airbag would happen to go off? Would taking out the fuse eliminate that problem?

the best way to do it would run the rca wires down the passenger side of the car, u can go under the carpet, where your feet would be at, n from there go down the side panel which pops off real easy, then just to the trunk n ur done. n then run the rest of the wires down the drivers side n throught he fire wall to the battery.

Does anybody know where I can find a custom-fit enclosure for single 12" sub? I need it to fit in a cavalier also.

Re: 98 cavalier cd player install

Geez people, the air bag isnt going to go off. The only time this rumor applies is with the 2000+ Cavalier/Sunfires because most shops will suggest a relocation kit. (I have personally witnessed an install on a 2003, and the only thing lost was the door chimes.. no air bag/transmission/abs issues)

Since you have a 98, you have no problems. If you arent familliar with installing a radio, its not that hard, but you have to run your own RCA wires to the amplifier, which can be run under the carpet as JerseyCav said. I have a 98 Z24 with a complete system, so im not talkin out my ass here...

I have personally wasted many hours trying to figure out this install, however when I found out about the screws, it was easy. I have a 99 z24 and once I found out how to take everything off, I installed the system I had in my old car. 2 x 12'' subs in the rear, 2 x 8'' subs in the rear seat side panels, replaced all the factory speakers with Clarion ones and 2 1000w clarion amps with a clarion deck. I am currently wishing to upgrade my deck to something that looks cooler.

As for your custom box, I was foolish and wasted many weekends building my own, then last week just as I finished I found a custom built box on ebay for 2 x 12" subs, looked really cool and the bid was low. Check it out, it might still be available. But if you live in the US, then there are thousands of shops that can build one for you, try finding a good shop here in Toronto, no luck, thats why I built everything myself. Good Luck!

Since you bring this up ,Wiring wise is it possible to put a factory cd player form a 200 Cavalier and put it into a 98 and have it work properly?

Re: 98 cavalier cd player install

Ive got a 2002 cavalier with a new deck and if I still had airbags in the car they would still work. All the airbag shit is just a rumor. With any electrical work in the car you should always disconect the battery to be safe.
