there's something retarded about my car....
Yeah, I haven't really been concerned about this problem cuz the engine does start. But it's finally gettin on my nerves:
Okay, I let my car sit overnight. Start up: vroom, just fine. Make a quick stop after like 10 min. Start up: a little slower but still good. Make another and another stop. Car start up gets slower and slower till I have to keep the key turned for like 5 sec before the engine turns. Head back home. Let car sit overnight. Cycle repeats. A lil thing that I noticed is that the car does manage to turn over sometimes when there's a delay when I stop turning the key. When it's back in position, I hear the engine start. So...what's up? I don't think it's the battery, voltage is fine. Starter...maybe? I need better grounding? Spark plugs maybe, I haven't changed them yet. I hope it's not the electrical system. |

Re: there's something retarded about my car....
Alternator, maybe-? Make sure your belt is on tight... or put a volt-a-meter to your ALT. and make sure it's not just your alt. Does any of your electronics dim or get faded-? Headlights? If it was the alternator I don't think that explains why your car never dies... and why it's okay when you start-up first thing. Could be your starter... gentlemen?

starter, my best guess??
it sounds like something related to heat? how is the temp??

Re: there's something retarded about my car....
i had a bad alternator on my old car, a corolla. man, that was a HELLISH experience. it kept dying on me on the way to the mechanic's and i musta asked everyone in the whole city to jump start my car at some point. SO, i really don't think it's the alternator completely gone bad. anyway, gonna get a diagnostic from the Nissan dealership to see what's up.
nothing else seems wrong, cept today the car didn't start until i took off the ground wire on the battery and put it back on tighter. so my guess right now is that the car isn't grounded very efficiently and that the car is charged up too much. the rest overnight causes the excess charge to dissipate. that's my guess tho. could be anything

If the alternator is ok possibly 3 things the pinion gear on the starter is worn or wearing .or flywheel teeth wearing .or your ignition switch contact points are wearing

Re: there's something retarded about my car....
went to nissan dealship and paid 39 bux to find out that my battery needed to be replaced. that and the fuel regulator needs to be replaced; it's running the fuel too rich in the engine at like 44 psi. so, until the engine stops cranking, i'm just gonna ignore the problem for now. thanx for the help on that.
i got 1 more thing. there's a rattling noise comin from around my timing chain and i can't figure out what the hell is wrong. i opened up the engine cover today and peered in. there's some wear and tear on the brackets near the chain. but the chain seems to be attached just fine....what exactly should i be looking for anyway to spot the problem here?? in the meantime, i need to replace the gaskets between the cover and the engine, but i doubt that's causing the chain to rattle. |
