Need Assistance Changing Brake Rotors & Drums

I have a 1988 Chevy K5 Blazer (5.7L 350 TBI). I purchased this truck about a month ago and I want to do a complete restoration on it. I want to change the brake rotors and pads and I heard it's a lil bit tricky because I have automatic locking hubs. I need assistance in taking apart the hub because I don't want to screw up the wheel bearings or anything. First, Does the truck need to be in 4 wheel drive before I even take off the hub or anything? Could anyone give me assistance? any special tools needed?? Please Email me at [email protected]

I recommend you buy the shop manual. Yes, it's expensive. You can probably make do with the Chilton manual, but I have been saved lots of grief and considerable money by my GM shop manual. It's year specific. (My Blazer is an '84.)

You do lock the hubs (my Chilton book stops at '87, so I'm not sure about your '88.) The illustration shows 31 components under removal and installation of locking hubs. I wouldn't go in there without a schematic, and some special tools are mentioned, but not described. Example: "6. Remove the wheel bearing outer lock nut, lock ring, and wheel bearing inner adjusting nut. A special wrench is required." Maybe somewhere Chilton explains that. The Chevy book would say something like "a left handed 21659 3/4 framus fluxer is necessary" and the dealer would tell you those have been discontinued. Welcome to old vehicle restoration.

Public libraries usually have these books as references, and you can xerox those sections you need. In fact, my Chilton 70-87 Pickup and suburban book came from a library disposal sale.
