Preformance Upgrade 90 GT 5.0

I just picked up my first stang, I got a 1990 Mustang 5.0 GT, pretty much stock with a system and a cowl hood. Im interested in preformance upgrades on a budget. I can't put 10k into the car, but just really wanted some help from you guys to see what I can do to the car to give it a bit more 1/4 mile speed. Just wanna see what is the best bang for my buck on a cheap budget.

P.S. it is a 5 speed manual, seems to allready have updated shifter.

Thanks,
Al

1.) Remove intake silencer
2.) Purchase an aftermarket filter setup: i.e. K&N or chrome CAI.
3.) GEARS!!! 3:73's
4.) Full exhaust: Headers, x-over pipe and cat-back.
5.) Underdrive pullies
6.) Some nice rubber. You wont be much faster if you can't hookup!

These are the best starting performance mods for any 5.0. A stiffer suspension will also help you out but may start costing you a bit more.

Great guys, thanks for the replies... I'll look into these. If you don't mind could you give me a ballpark estimeate for these upgrades, and maybe which one are more importain to do first. Just to add this is a steet car that I will be driving a lot, I think it may have a upgraded fuel intake, im going to check on that.

Thanks again,
Al

1.) Free
2.) $125 - $150ish
3.) The gears will cost about $200 w/o install cost.
4.) Exhaust can run many different prices depending upon what you want. At least $500 I'd say
5.) Pullies about $100 or less
6.) Tires will run at least $100 a peice for some good ones.

Removing silencer and adding a cold air intake and pullies all seem like really cheap things I can do myself right away. This is probibly still a total newbi question but do I still remove the air silencer if i add a cold air intake?

Thanks,
Al

Yes, the silencer is located inside the fender well, on the opposite side of the air filter box. Actually, I wouldn't really recomend a CAI because of it's cost. You can get the same effect by replacing your stock filter with a high flow panal filter by K&N.

Adusting the ignition timing is also free, except for the cost of the light.

Re: Preformance Upgrade 90 GT 5.0

I think im going to pick up that CAI tonight, I was examining the STOCK air intake on the car (last owner thought it was cool putting his k&n sticker on it) and I see how it sort of a ram air system intake comming from the wheel well... my question is does adding the CAI kinda bypass the built in air flow setup on the GT. Again this is just a observation on my end but is adding the CAI will give me more HP im picking it up.
