I'm curious as to the details on #65. When was it produced, and why was it not registered ?

Drawing from memory here, I think it was built towards the end of the 1997 production cycle. It wasn't nearly the last one produced, it's just the last unregistered example.

My guess is that McLaren Cars wanted something to put in the showroom in place of Carl Beal's which was removed at about the same time. Towards the end of production, sadly there weren't a lot of buyers for $1,000,000 cars. I'd assume they've had some offers on the car over the years, but I doubt they were hurting to sell it from a money standpoint.

No clue on the red one. The source on the photo didn't have any more info.

As for the Carl Beal comment - If you go back and look at the posts made about that car by cbeal, F1WRENCH, or Will69Camaro, one of them mentions that he bought the car from their showroom in 1997. I can only assume then that his was the silver F1 sitting in the McLaren showroom from the time it was built in 1995 until 1997 when he bought it.

Most definitely could be. It would of course depend on the age of the photo, but I doubt there are many that have made it on the web from before 1997 so it's a safe bet that most are #065.

I wonder which car was there pre-1995. Obviously that unknown red one spent some time there. If it were my decision, I'd have left the Clinic Model in there - I'm guessing 90% of visitors wouldn't have really known any better.

If he bought it from the showroom in 1997, how come it says "For almost a decade, chassis No. 65 has been window dressing in McLaren’s flagship showroom on London’s Park Lane." in the Autoweek article. That would mean #65 has been there since maybe 1995.

As I stated above, chassis #065 was produced in 1997, so there's no chance that it could have been displayed in the showroom prior to that year. I had thought it was one of the last '97 road cars produced, but in actuality, there were 6 more completed after it as well as the two customer GTs in 1997.

I liken that "For almost a decade..." statement to the claim from McLaren that they only produced 100 F1s when in fact it was 106, or that all five F1 LMs were painted orange when their own material and several knowledgeable sources have confirmed the existence of the two black ones.

the little i know, chassis #065 was the 52nd car built in 1997 painted in Magnesium Silver, so I agree couldn´t have been display before that year.

I always wondered..... does any of you know what this color "yquem" looks like? Anyone know the location of this car?
Also, while on the subject, what is the difference between "magnesium" silver and "Mercedes brilliant" silver? I've seen the Park Lane car and I believe it's the former? And how about "jet black" and "black 235"? Are there any pictures of such cars?

Yquem being the name for a white Bordeaux, a white french wine, Sauternes to be precise, I would guess it is basicly a white with light gold shade in it.

But it is a guess.

mercedes brilliant silver is lighter than magnesium silver and i've never heard of a "black 235". The park lane car is magnesium silver. Yquem is a goldish color. do a google image search and the wine should come up
