Question 96 Legacy Rear Wheel noise while cornering

I have a 96 Legacy AWD brighton wagon (5 spd). A week or two ago i started hearing a strange noise while turning right that i think is coming from the rear right wheel, but is hard to pinpoint. It only happens when I am in gear and driving, not in neutral or with foot on clutch, and more obvious in sharper corners.
Someone suggested i check my wheel nuts and they're tight. Is this a differential problem? could my ears deceive me and it is actually a CV joint problem from the front wheels?
Please advise....

Could you perhaps describe the noise better?
Is it a knocking noise?
Is it consistant throughout the corner?

It could also be from the rear shock mounts as they have a tendency to wear too.

Re: Re: 96 Legacy Rear Wheel noise while cornering

The noise is most evident at the end of a 90 degree corner (taking a right at a corner), just before and as i start straightening the wheels.

The noise is rhythmic, not constant. It lasts for about 2 seconds usually and pulses about 8 times during the 2 seconds. I imagine a worm gear or 90 degree drives teeth grinding with each pulse of the noise.

Man, describing a noise is not easy without sounding like a real twit!

That doesn't sound like a CV joint, they make a pronounced knocking sound.

It could be something rubbing due to a worn shock mounting or even a thrust bearing.

I got a 96 Legacy L AWD, and this is just a suggestion, but I had the "tires" making this noise only when I was stopping and then cornering. Since I rotated the tires I don't hear any more noise.
