2.3 distributor clamp?

My First time trying to adjust the timing of my 2.3. How do i access the distributer clamp bolt? I can't get in from the top, and from the side there is no clearlance to move the wrench. Is there a specialty tool for this job or, do i have to remove the PCV valve seat hose to loosen the clamp, then re install it to start the car and adjust timing, then take it off again the tighten the clamp? Please help!

Thanks

Re: 2.3 distributor clamp?

I think i found a specialty wrench for this job. All of the stores carry a 9/16 or 1/2 size, i only checked it out quickly, but i think the clamp bolt was a 17mm. Anyone know?

Re: 2.3 distributor clamp?

17mm, just checked my car. I found remove the PCV valve, push the hose down, take off the timing cover, this should give you more room to shimmy the bolt loose with the wrench, good luck!

Re: 2.3 distributor clamp?

i pulled the plug wires (or moved them out of the way) and stuck a 3/8 drive 17mm socket down there with a big long extension. worked for me. also, if you get an open-ended oil filter wrench, you can turn your dist without loosening that bolt. also, grab a hold of the electrical connector on the side and give it a tug. that's how i adjust mine. dauber, why pull the timing cover off? that's such a pain, gotta take off the belts and water pump pulley to get at it!

Re: 2.3 distributor clamp?

Never thought about that Stangnut86, the last time I adjusted the timing was hmmm...three years ago, lack of tools, but I see what your saying now when I double take a look at the engine, I'll keep your trick in mind, thanks. I always got to do things the hard way the first time, then find easier ways the second time!
